چکیده

We have used the Potsdam-Allahabad Hindi Eye-tracking Corpus that contains eyemovement data from 30 participants on 153 sentences to investigate the effect of surprisal and retrieval on reading time, while controlling for word-level predictors (word complexity, syllable length, unigram and bigram frequency) and integration and storage costs. We find that surprisal has a significant coefficient in only in First Pass Reading Time while storage cost shows up only in Total Fixation Time, thus indicating that the two measures of predictability capture different cognitive variables.

Role of Expectation and Working Memory Constraints in Hindi Comprehension: An Eye-tracking Corpus Analysis

We used the Potsdam-Allahabad Hindi eye-tracking corpus to investigate the role of word-level and sentence-level factors during sentence comprehension in Hindi. Extending previous work that used this eye-tracking data, we investigate the role of surprisal and retrieval cost metrics during sentence processing. While controlling for word-level predictors (word complexity, syllable length, unigram...

Integration and prediction difficulty in Hindi sentence comprehension: Evidence from an eye-tracking corpus

This is the first attempt at characterizing reading difficulty in Hindi using naturally occurring sentences. We created the Potsdam-Allahabad Hindi Eyetracking Corpus by recording eye-movement data from 30 participants at the University of Allahabad, India. The target stimuli were 153 sentences selected from the beta version of the Hindi-Urdu treebank. We find that wordor low-level predictors (...

The relationship between working memory and L2 reading comprehension

Comparing Semantic and Syntactic Expectation between Verbs and Thematic Roles: Evidence from Eyetracking

Introduction It has been shown with priming paradigms at the single word level (e.g., Edmonds & Mizrahi, 2011; Ferretti, McRae, & Hatherell, 2001) and eyetracking methods at the sentence level (e.g., Altmann & Kamide, 1999; Kamide, Scheepers, & Altmann, 2003) that a verb generates semantic expectations about an upcoming noun (McRae, Ferretti, & Amyote, 1997). In addition to semantic relationshi...

Material Development and English for Academic Purposes Word Lists; a Reductionist Approach

Nagy (1988) states that vocabulary is a prerequisite factor in comprehension. Drawing upon a reductionist approach and having in mind the prospects for material development, this study aimed at creating an English for Academic Purposes Word List (EAPWL). The corpus of this study was compiled from a corpus containing 6479 pages of texts, 2,081,678 million tokens (running words) and 63825 types (...
